What does muklawa mean in Punjabi? Muklawa (ਮੁਕਲਾਵਾ) is the ceremony in which a bride leaves her parents’ home to go and live at her husband’s home after the wedding. Rekhta Dictionary gives it as the bride’s departure for a second time to her father-in-law’s house, in the ceremony of her dismissal with her husband.
What does muklawa mean in Punjabi?
Muklawa names the sending off itself, not the wedding ceremony. The marriage has already taken place, the bride has come back to her parents for a short first visit, and muklawa is the moment she leaves again, this time to settle at her husband’s home. A Punjab marriage account describes that sequence directly: after the Phere Pana, the bride’s first short visit home with her husband, her parents give her clothes and other gifts when she has to leave for her husband’s home again, and this ceremony is known as Muklawa.
Why was muklawa separate from the wedding day?
In the older practice the wedding day and the start of married life were not always the same thing. Punjabi Mania, writing about the 2019 film Muklawa, notes that the film revolves around this age-old ceremony and that, back in the day, husband and wife were not allowed even to meet each other until the muklawa had been sent, so muklawa was considered the real validation of the marriage. That long gap belongs to an earlier time. The word survives today for the formal second departure after the first visit home, and in songs and film titles that recall the older custom.
How is muklawa different from doli?
Doli is the bride’s first leaving on the wedding day itself, when she departs from her parents’ home in the decorated palanquin or car. Muklawa comes after that. It is the second, settling departure, the one after which she begins living at her in-laws’ home. Keeping the two words apart helps when reading older accounts, wedding songs and family stories, where a bride may be sent in doli and still be waiting for her muklawa.
