What does pota mean in Punjabi? Pota (ਪੋਤਾ) means grandson, but only in one precise sense: a son's son. Punjabi does not use one loose word for every grandson. It names the exact link, so the boy born to your son is your pota, and the grandparents who use the word are his dada and dadi.
What does pota mean in Punjabi?
A pota is the son of your son. Relation lists in Punjabi give the pair plainly: dada is the paternal grandfather, dadi is the paternal grandmother, and pota, also written potra (ਪੋਤਰਾ), is their grandson through their son. The plural is pote (ਪੋਤੇ). The word is spoken from the grandparents' side of the relationship: a man does not call himself a pota in everyday talk, his dada ji and dadi ji call him theirs, and everyone else in the family uses it to place him in the family tree.
How is pota different from dohta?
Dohta (ਦੋਹਤਾ) is a daughter's son. That is the whole difference, and Punjabi keeps it sharp where English lets the single word grandson cover both boys. The same child can hold both names at once, from two different doorsteps: to his father's parents he is a pota, and to his mother's parents, his nana and nani, he is a dohta. Family guides for learners make the same split, setting a son's children, pota and poti, on the dada and dadi side, and a daughter's children, dohta and dohti, on the nana and nani side.
What comes after a pota in the family line?
The line keeps its own names as it grows. A pota's own son is a parpota (ਪੜਪੋਤਾ), a great grandson, so a dada who lives to hold that baby has reached the fourth generation of his own house. In daily life, the pota is often the child a dada takes to the fields, the gurdwara and the village sath, and the one elders introduce with open pride, saying simply: eh mera pota hai, this is my grandson.
