Arif Lohar (born 18 April 1966) is a Pakistani Punjabi folk singer from Achh village near Lalamusa in Gujrat district, and the son and heir of Alam Lohar, the singer who carried Jugni across Punjab. With a chimta, the iron tongs his father turned into a folk instrument, in his hands, Arif has sung on stages from village fairs to Coke Studio, recorded more than 3,000 songs across some 150 albums, and taken the folk music of Punjab to audiences in more than fifty tours abroad.

A childhood in his father's shadow

Arif Lohar was born on 18 April 1966 in Achh, a small village in Kharian tehsil of Gujrat district, the village his father came from. Alam Lohar, who settled in Lalamusa, was by then one of the most loved folk voices in Punjab, famous for Jugni, Heer and his chimta playing. Arif began singing young, performing alongside his seven brothers, and grew up in a household where folk songs were the family trade. In time he took up the chimta himself, and the instrument became his signature on stage. He was still young when his father died, and the brothers carried the family tradition forward together.

He learned music the folk way, not in an academy: at mehfils, weddings and village fairs, singing the verses his father had sung before him. That grounding still shows in his repertoire, which runs from Jugni and Heer to Sufi kalams and wedding songs, and in a stage style built on raw energy rather than polish.

How did Arif Lohar take Jugni around the world?

The turning point came in the 2000s. Working with the Wolverhampton producer Mukhtar Sahota on the UK label Internalmusic, Arif recorded 21st Century Jugni, and his Jugni duet with Nooran Lal became popular in both Pakistan and India. In 2010 he stepped onto the Coke Studio stage for Season 3 and sang Alif Allah (Jugni) with Meesha Shafi. The performance, built on the verses of Sultan Bahu, became an international success, watched hundreds of millions of times, and introduced a new generation to Punjabi folk. His managers at Jazba Entertainment call it one of the defining Pakistani recordings of its era.

Bollywood followed. Saif Ali Khan bought the rights to Jugni for his film Cocktail, and in 2013 Arif sang in Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, the biopic of the Flying Sikh, Milkha Singh. In 2012 he performed Jugni Ji at the Asia Society in New York, and his tours have taken the chimta to the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada and the Gulf.

Records, films and honours

Few Punjabi singers can match his output. Most of his more than 3,000 recorded songs are in Punjabi, and alongside singing he acted in around 45 Punjabi films. For Syed Noor's film Jugni (2012) he sang and produced three songs, and the film became the highest-grossing Pakistani film of its year. Pakistan honoured him with the Pride of Performance in 2005, and in 2018 the Brit Asia TV Music Awards gave him a Lifetime Achievement Award.

His live record is as unusual as his catalogue. In 2004 he performed in China for the opening ceremony of the Asian Games, before a crowd reported at nearly a million people, and he has also performed in North Korea as part of a peace delegation to Kim Jong-il, an experience almost no other folk singer can claim.

A Lohar performance is built around the chimta's rhythm, sharp and metallic, driven hard enough to lift a crowd to its feet. Singers of his generation often modernised folk by softening it; Arif did the opposite, keeping the village sound intact and letting the world's stages come to it. The result is a sound a village audience recognises instantly, and a concert crowd in London or Toronto hears as home.

Family and giving back

Music remains a family affair. His eldest brother, Dr Arshad Mahmood Lohar, founded the Alam Lohar Memorial Trust in 2004 to preserve their father's legacy and support folk artists. Arif himself has campaigned in Britain to improve health awareness among British Asians, and for the victims of the 2010 Pakistan floods. And he has kept surprising younger listeners: his crossover track Aa, with Roach Killa and the Canadian producer Deep Jandu, showed that the chimta still belongs on the modern stage. Three generations on, the surname Lohar still means folk singing in Punjab, and Arif remains its loudest living voice.
