Imroz (26 January 1926 to 22 December 2023), born Inderjeet Singh at Chak 36 in Lyallpur, was a Punjabi painter, illustrator and poet who gave modern Punjabi literature its visual face. He designed Amrita Pritam's book covers, ran the monthly magazine Nagmani with her for 33 years, and shared her life for over four decades.
Early life in Lyallpur
Inderjeet Singh was born on 26 January 1926 at Chak number 36 in Lyallpur district, in the canal colony country of undivided Punjab, in what is now Pakistan. Little is recorded in print about his childhood, and accounts of his life begin in earnest with the artist he became: a young man drawn to drawing and painting in a Punjab that Partition was about to divide.
Lyallpur itself, today ਫ਼ੈਸਲਾਬਾਦ, was one of the planned canal cities of British Punjab, and its mixed literary and commercial life formed the world he grew up in. After 1947 his life, like Amrita Pritam's, was rebuilt on the Indian side of the new border, in Delhi's Punjabi literary circles. He earned his living as a commercial artist and illustrator, work that put his line at the service of other people's words before anyone knew his name.
How did Inderjeet become Imroz?
He became Imroz when Amrita Pritam entered his life. They met in the 1950s, when she was already one of the best known figures in Punjabi literature and he was working as an illustrator, including on her books. In 1966, when she began publishing the monthly Punjabi magazine Nagmani, he joined her as its artist and illustrator, and it was then that Inderjeet took the name Imroz, a word meaning today.
The two set up home together in Delhi's Hauz Khas, and they stayed together for over forty years, until her death in 2005, without marrying. In the India of those decades a celebrated woman writer living with a younger artist outside marriage was a quietly radical arrangement, and they carried it without apology or publicity. She became the central subject of his paintings, and he became the steady presence behind her working life.
His acceptance extended to her past. Amrita's youthful love for the poet Sahir Ludhianvi was famous, and Imroz is reported to have kept Sahir's picture in his own room, reasoning that anyone loved by Amrita was dear to him too. The anecdote, retold in Uma Trilok's book on the couple, became the measure by which readers judged his devotion: secure rather than possessive.
The artist: covers, canvases and Nagmani
Imroz's art gave modern Punjabi writing a look. He designed and illustrated Amrita Pritam's books across decades, so that for many readers her poems arrive with his line already attached: spare figures, lovers drawn close, faces that seem to dissolve into colour. His paintings drew on Punjabi folk motifs and on modernist simplicity in equal measure, and they were exhibited and admired in their own right, not only as companions to her fame.
The shared enterprise was Nagmani, which Amrita edited and Imroz designed and illustrated for 33 years, from 1966 until the magazine closed in the early 2000s as her health declined. The Global Indian profile of Amrita notes that the magazine gave new writers, especially women, a place to publish. It is also credited with encouraging writers who became central to modern Punjabi prose and poetry, among them ਦਲੀਪ ਕੌਰ ਟਿਵਾਣਾ and ਸ਼ਿਵ ਕੁਮਾਰ ਬਟਾਲਵੀ, and Imroz's illustrations were part of its identity for more than thirty years. Month after month, his covers and drawings taught a generation of Punjabi readers what contemporary writing looked like before they read a word of it.
That visual work is easy to undervalue because it served another writer's name. Its real achievement was consistency: one artist's hand across hundreds of issues and dozens of book covers, building a recognisable world around a literature that had few designers of its own. Punjabi publishing looked different because Imroz had drawn it.
The poet: four books written for Amrita
Imroz came to poetry late. Obituaries record that he began writing poems when Amrita's health started failing, and that he kept writing after her death on 31 October 2005, keeping her present through verse. In all he wrote four poetry books dedicated to her.
The collections named in accounts of his work are Jashan Jaari Hai, for which he received an award, Manchaaha Hi Rishta and Rang Tere Mere. His poems are plain spoken and direct, closer to a letter than to a performance, and they return again and again to one subject: love as something practised daily, in care and in memory, rather than declared once.
The exchange ran both ways. Amrita's last poem, Main Tainu Pher Milangi, written in 2004, was addressed to Imroz: a promise to meet him again, in some form, beyond this life. It is now among the most quoted of all her poems, and it means that the last word of her writing life belongs to the painter who had spent decades answering her words with images.
Later life in Mumbai and death
After Amrita's death, Imroz lived in Mumbai with Alka Kwatra, Amrita's daughter in law. Friends who visited describe a room full of her photographs and his sketches of her. He corrected anyone who spoke of Amrita in the past tense: Amrita hai, yahin hai, she is here, she is right here. In his telling, she had not gone anywhere.
He died at his Mumbai home in Kandivali on 22 December 2023, aged ninety seven, of age related illness, after some days in hospital. The poet Amiya Kunwar, a close acquaintance, confirmed his death to the press, and his last rites were performed at the Dahanukarwadi crematorium in Kandivali, among family and close friends.
Why does Imroz matter to Punjabi literature?
Imroz matters because Punjabi literature remembers not only its writers but the world built around them, and he built much of that world. Uma Trilok's Amrita-Imroz: A Love Story, published in 2006, fixed the couple's partnership in print while he was still alive, and the Tribune's review called it a love legend of the times. Retellings on stage and in the press have kept the story in circulation ever since.
Read alongside ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਾ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ, he stands as the quieter half of one of Punjabi letters' defining partnerships: she gave the words, he gave the face. His paintings, his book covers, 33 years of Nagmani and four books of poems are the record of an artist who made devotion itself a body of work.
