Shiv Kumar Batalvi (23 July 1936 to 6 May 1973) was a Punjabi poet, playwright and lyricist from Batala, best known for Loona, his verse play retelling the Puran Bhagat legend through its queen. His poetry of love and separation made him a defining romantic voice, and in 1967 he became the youngest recipient of the Sahitya Akademi Award.
Early life in Bara Pind Lohtian and Batala
Shiv Kumar was born in Bara Pind Lohtian, a village in Shakargarh tehsil in what was then Sialkot district and is now in Pakistan. His father, Pandit Krishan Gopal Sharma, worked in the revenue department, and his mother was Shanti Devi. Some documents give a different birth date in 1937, but 23 July 1936 is the date most widely recorded for him.
Partition changed the course of his childhood. In 1947, when he was eleven, the family moved to ਬਟਾਲਾ in Gurdaspur district, and he later took his pen name Batalvi from that town. Biographical accounts describe a dreamy boy who loved local storytelling, wandering singers and the Ramayana tradition, images that later surfaced throughout his verse and gave it a strong rural colour.
His schooling was unsettled. He matriculated in 1953, started a science course at Baring Union Christian College in Batala, moved to an arts programme at S. N. College in Qadian, tried a civil engineering diploma at Baijnath, and studied for a time at Nabha, without completing a degree. Formal study never held him, but reading and listening did, and by his late teens poetry had become his real education.
Finding his voice as a poet
His first collection, Piran da Paraga, appeared in 1960 and brought him immediate attention. Senior writers in the Batala and Qadian literary circles encouraged him, and a run of books followed in quick succession: Lajwanti in 1961, Aate Diyan Chiriyaan in 1962, Mainu Vida Karo in 1963, and both Dardmandan Diyan Aahin and Birha Tu Sultan in 1964. The titles alone show his territory: sorrow, farewell and longing.
What set him apart was how his poems sounded aloud. He recited and sang his own verse, and audiences who might never buy a poetry book learned his lines by ear. That musical, direct Punjabi, rooted in folk forms but shaped by a modern sensibility, turned private feeling into something a whole generation could recognise as its own.
Why is Shiv Kumar Batalvi called the poet of birha?
He is called the poet of birha because separation is the central feeling in his work: lovers parted, a self parted from what it loves, and a homeland parted by Partition. Birha in his hands is not only romantic sadness. It becomes a way of talking about every kind of loss, which is why readers who have never shared his exact story still find their own grief in his lines.
That focus put him in a different camp from the progressive and revolutionary poets of his day, such as ਪਾਸ਼, who wanted verse to serve political change. Batalvi insisted, in effect, that longing and heartbreak were also true subjects for poetry. Punjabi literature is richer for having both arguments running side by side, and readers have kept returning to his side of it ever since.
Loona and the Sahitya Akademi Award
His best known work is Loona, published in 1965. It retells the old Puran Bhagat story, in which the young prince Puran is punished after his stepmother Loona accuses him. Earlier tellings treat Loona mainly as the villain. Batalvi shifts the centre of the story to her, exploring a young woman married to a much older king, her desire, her humiliation and the social order that traps her.
The change of perspective is what made the work landmark. Critics credit Loona with creating a modern form of the Punjabi kissa, the long narrative poem, and it is still studied and staged as a high point of modern Punjabi writing. In 1967 it won the Sahitya Akademi Award, and Batalvi, at thirty one, became the youngest recipient of that honour at the time.
A later collection, ਬਿਰਹਾ ਤੂੰ ਸੁਲਤਾਨ, underlines how closely his name and the theme of separation became linked. The phrase itself, often rendered as calling separation a king, captures his belief that longing rules the inner life more completely than any outward power.
Marriage, work and the England visit
On 5 February 1967 he married Aruna, who came from Kiri Mangial in Gurdaspur district. The couple had two children, Meharban, born in 1968, and Puja, born in 1969. In 1968 the family moved to Chandigarh, where he took a job with the State Bank of India, and he continued to write even as his health weakened.
In May 1972 he travelled to England, where Punjabi audiences received him warmly at public functions and private gatherings, and BBC Television interviewed him. The visit showed how far his reputation had travelled with the diaspora. It also strained a body already in decline, and after his return to India in September 1972 his health fell sharply.
Final months and death
Accounts of his last months describe liver cirrhosis, money worries and frustration at criticism of his work. He was treated in Chandigarh and Amritsar, left hospital against medical advice because he did not want to die there, and spent his final period with family. He died in the early hours of 6 May 1973 at Kiri Mangial, his wife's maternal village, aged thirty six. The existing Jugti entry gave Batala as the place of death: the fuller biographical record places it at Kiri Mangial, and this deepening corrects that detail.
Legacy in song and on stage
His afterlife has been unusually musical. Singers including Jagjit Singh and Chitra Singh, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Surinder Kaur, ਹੰਸ ਰਾਜ ਹੰਸ and Ghulam Ali have performed his poems, and the song Maye Ni Maye remains one of the best known settings of his words. Later adaptations carried his verse into film and popular music, including Ajj Din Chhadeya in the 2009 Hindi film Love Aaj Kal and Ikk Kudi in the 2016 film Udta Punjab.
Batala honours him in public memory. An auditorium named for him was built there in 2011 for his seventy fifth birth anniversary, and an annual Shiv Kumar Batalvi Award recognises writers in his name. His posthumous collection Alvida appeared in 1974 from Guru Nanak Dev University in Amritsar.
Read alongside ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਾ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮ and Mohan Singh, he stands among the central figures of modern Punjabi poetry, popular on both sides of the India and Pakistan border. His life was short and his output concentrated in little more than a decade, yet few Punjabi poets are quoted, sung or argued about as often. That is his legacy: he made longing sound like common speech, and common speech sound like poetry.
