Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Monday, 26 October 2026, flagged off 100 new minibuses at the Punjab Roadways Transport Corporation (PRTC) headquarters in Patiala, saying his government wants every village connected to cities. He also announced that another 309 full-size buses will join the fleet next month.
What did Bhagwant Mann announce in Patiala?
Mann said that just as canal water has reached every field, buses would reach every village in Punjab. According to PTI and The Tribune, he took a swipe at earlier governments for discontinuing village-to-city bus services, and said the new fleet would ease daily travel for residents and students and improve access to education, employment and essential services. Transport Minister Harpal Singh Cheema and Health Minister Balbir Singh were present at the event.
Which routes and depots will get the minibuses?
The 100 minibuses are 29-seaters meant for rural and small-town routes. They have been allocated across PRTC depots including Patiala, Bathinda, Chandigarh, Sangrur, Barnala, Budhlada, Kapurthala, Faridkot and Ludhiana. The Tribune reported that Patiala gets the largest share, 25 of the 100 buses.
What about jobs?
Mann said the induction would create employment for around 150 young people, and 15 youths were handed offer letters for jobs in the transport department at the event, according to a government statement carried by CityAir News and ETV Bharat.
What comes next?
The chief minister said 309 large buses would be added to the fleet next month. Swarajya reported he also noted that around 3,000 privately operated minibuses already connect towns. Mann also spoke to reporters in Patiala on other issues of the day, including the Jhota case.
