Where is Rattan Heri?

Rattan Heri is a village in Samana tehsil of Patiala district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Samana, about 10 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Samana community development block and is served by the Rattanheri gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 036169, and it covers 431 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,207 people in Rattan Heri: 633 men and 574 women, living in 211 households, an average of about 5.7 people per household. Spread over its 431 hectares, the population density works out to about 280 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 907 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 142, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 246 people, about 20 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 68.26 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 72.58 per cent and women at 63.71 per cent. The census recorded 384 workers, about 32 per cent of the village. Of the 331 main workers, the largest group, 162, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 86 agricultural labourers and 69 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 53 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from canals (404 hectares). About 27 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 162 cultivators and 126 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

Neighbouring villages include Marauri, Sapar Heri, Mardan Heri and Asmanpur.
