Bhai Maha Singh Ji was the leader and spokesman of the forty Sikhs of the Majha who signed the bedava, the written disclaimer, at Anandpur Sahib in 1704, and who, led back by Mai Bhago Ji, died fighting at Khidrana on 29 December 1705. Mortally wounded, he lived just long enough to ask Guru Gobind Singh Ji to tear up the bedava, and he died in the Guru's lap as the forty were blessed as the Chali Mukte, the forty liberated ones.

Bhai Maha Singh Ji, whose name many accounts write as Mahan Singh, was the Majha Sikh who led the forty who renounced Guru Gobind Singh Ji at Anandpur Sahib, and then led them back to die for him at Khidrana. His dying request, that the Guru tear up the written disclaimer they had signed, gave the forty their redemption and their lasting name: the Chali Mukte, the forty liberated ones.
Spokesman of the forty
During the long siege of Anandpur Sahib in 1704, Mughal and hill forces cut off the food of the forts, and the besiegers promised safe passage to any Sikh who would declare he was the Guru's Sikh no longer. Forty Sikhs of the Majha, starving and worn down, decided to take the offer. These were men who had gone up to Anandpur to fight for the Guru when the armies closed in, soldiers who had chosen his side, which is what made their fall, and their return, matter so much in the telling. Their spokesman was Maha Singh. It was he who stood before Guru Gobind Singh Ji and spoke for the group: they were his Sikhs no more. The Guru let them go on one condition, that the break be put in writing, and the forty signed the bedava, the formal disclaimer, and rode for home. The full story of the siege and the disclaimer is told on the Forty Mukte page.
The road back under Mai Bhago
At home in the Majha, the forty found no honour waiting for them. At Jhabal Kalan, Mai Bhago Ji, a soldier's daughter married into the same countryside, shamed them publicly for deserting the Guru in his hardest hour. Her rebuke reached Maha Singh and his companions, and the forty resolved to return and seek forgiveness. They were not riding out to battle first; they were riding to apologise and ask to be taken back as Sikhs. The battle found them before the apology could be spoken, and they made it with their lives instead. Under her lead they rode out across the Malwa to find the Guru, who since leaving Anandpur had been fleeing and fighting through the region with the imperial army of Wazir Khan behind him. This time Maha Singh led men who knew exactly what returning would cost.
Khidrana: the last request
On 29 December 1705, at the pool of Khidrana, the forty and Mai Bhago met the pursuing Mughal force and held it, buying the Guru his road south. Every one of the forty was cut down. When Guru Gobind Singh Ji came onto the field, he found Maha Singh still alive, barely, among the dead. The Guru lifted his head into his lap and asked his dying wish. Maha Singh asked for nothing for himself. He asked that the bedava be cancelled, the paper torn up, so that he and his companions would be counted the Guru's own again. The Guru granted it at once and tore up the document, which some accounts say was drawn from the dying man's own clothing. Maha Singh died in peace, his head in the Guru's lap, and the forty were blessed as the Chali Mukte. Khidrana took its new name from their blessing: Muktsar, the pool of liberation.
A short record, carefully kept
Very little is firmly recorded about Maha Singh's own life before 1704, and the later accounts do not agree with each other. One tradition makes him a Puar Rajput, son of Rai Singh and a nephew of the great scholar martyr Bhai Mani Singh; the Mai Bhago account on SikhiWiki calls him Mahan Singh Brar, while Wikipedia's account names him Mahan Singh Rataul. The spelling of his name itself varies, Maha Singh and Mahan Singh. What every source shares is the outline that matters: he led the forty out of Anandpur, he led them back under Mai Bhago, he died last at Khidrana, and his one request undid the bedava for all of them. Jugti records his family details as unsettled rather than guess at them.
In the telling of the story his name is the one that frames it: first spoken when the forty present their renunciation, and last in the traditional list of the forty names, where Bhai Mahan Singh closes the roll. Every January, when Mela Maghi fills Sri Muktsar Sahib, his dying request is the moral centre of the tale the pilgrims come to hear, and visitors to the gurdwaras of the battlefield still hear his name wherever the story is told from the siege to the tearing of the paper as one arc, with his request at its climax.
What did Bhai Maha Singh ask Guru Gobind Singh Ji?
Dying on the field of Khidrana, Bhai Maha Singh asked Guru Gobind Singh Ji to cancel and tear up the bedava, the written disclaimer he and the forty had signed at Anandpur Sahib. The Guru tore up the paper, forgave the forty, and blessed them as the Chali Mukte, the forty liberated ones.
