Kaulsar Sahib is the shrine and sacred sarovar of Bibi Kaulan, a devoted follower of Guru Hargobind Ji, the sixth Sikh Guru. It stands just west of Gurdwara Baba Atal Sahib, a short walk from the Golden Temple in Amritsar, and its holy tank is one of the five sacred sarovars of the city. The tank was excavated between 1624 and 1627 under the supervision of Baba Budha Ji, the first head granthi of the Golden Temple.

Who was Bibi Kaulan?

Bibi Kaulan was raised as a Muslim. She was the adopted daughter of the Qazi of Lahore (some accounts describe her as possibly Hindu by birth), and from an early age she was drawn to a spiritual life. She found inspiration in the teachings of the Sikh Gurus and in the company of the Sufi saint Mian Mir, the same revered figure who had laid the foundation stone of the Golden Temple.

When her devotion to Guru Hargobind Ji became known, her father declared her an infidel and pronounced a sentence of death upon her. Sai Mian Mir brought her discreetly to Amritsar and placed her under the Guru's protection. She was given a place to live near the Golden Temple, close to where Gurdwara Baba Atal Sahib now stands, and she spent the rest of her life there in meditation and service to others. She was known for the passionate kirtan she sang every evening, which left a deep impression on the Sikh congregation. She breathed her last at Kartarpur, and her samadh stands at the western end of the Kaulsar Gurdwara.

The sarovar and the gurdwara

The tank beside the shrine is called Kaulsar Sahib, named for Bibi Kaulan herself. Its excavation began in 1624 and was completed in 1627, carried out under the supervision of Baba Budha Ji. The shrine that grew up beside it is known as Gurdwara Mata Kaulan Sahib, and together they form one of the quieter, more contemplative corners of the Golden Temple's neighbourhood.

The shrine's standing rests on a single, powerful tradition: Guru Hargobind Ji is said to have directed devotees to bathe in the Kaulsar sarovar before entering the Amrit Sarovar at the Golden Temple. A sakhi to this effect is inscribed just outside the entrance of the gurdwara, beside the Darbar Sahib complex. In March 2004 a karseva of the sarovar was completed, and a modern filtration system was installed. It is described as the first sarovar anywhere named after a Muslim woman.

One of the five holy sarovars

Kaulsar is counted among the five sacred tanks of Amritsar: Santokhsar, Bibeksar, Ramsar, Kaulsar, and the Amrit Sarovar at the Golden Temple, which gave the city its name. Many pilgrims pause at Kaulsar to bathe before making their way to Harmandir Sahib, honouring the Guru's direction. In this way the tank is not a separate attraction but part of the living ritual life of the city.

What happens on a visit to Kaulsar Sahib?

The gurdwara is smaller and calmer than the Golden Temple, and its mood is one of quiet devotion. Visitors bathe in the sarovar, sit in contemplation along its banks, and pay their respects at Bibi Kaulan's samadh at the western end. Kirtan and the recitation of Gurbani fill the shrine through the day. Because the place honours a woman who rose above every religious divide, it is often described as a symbol of the Sikh teaching that devotion belongs to no single community, and visitors of every background are made welcome.

How to reach Kaulsar Sahib

The shrine stands on Golden Temple Road in Amritsar, immediately west of Gurdwara Baba Atal Sahib and just behind Harmandir Sahib itself. Amritsar is well connected by rail and air, with Amritsar Central railway station and the Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport serving the city. The gurdwara is generally open from around 5 in the morning until about 11 at night. Anyone visiting the Golden Temple can walk over in a few minutes, making Kaulsar Sahib an easy addition to a day of darshan.
