Gurdwaras in Indian Punjab are the historic Sikh shrines of India's Punjab state, the land where Sikhism was born and where most of its defining events happened. This guide gathers every Punjab shrine in the Jugti Kosh in one place: the Golden Temple and the five sarovars of Amritsar, the Guru Nanak towns of Sultanpur Lodhi and the Tarn Taran country, the martyrdom shrines of Muktsar and Fatehgarh Sahib, and the Guru Gobind Singh Marg route across Malwa. Each name below links to a full entry with its history and visiting notes.

Why does Punjab hold so many historic gurdwaras?

Punjab is where all ten human Gurus lived most of their lives. Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born at Talwandi, worked and received enlightenment at Sultanpur Lodhi, married at Batala and settled his family towns across the Majha and Doaba. His successors founded Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Khadur Sahib, Goindwal and Anandpur Sahib, and the last Guru's final journey in 1704 to 1705 crossed the whole state, leaving a shrine at almost every halt. Three of the five Takhts, the thrones of Sikh authority, stand in Punjab: the Akal Takht at Amritsar, Kesgarh Sahib at Anandpur Sahib and Damdama Sahib at Talwandi Sabo. No other region carries this density of Guru period shrines.

The Takhts and the great shrines

Start at Amritsar, where the Harmandir Sahib faces the Akal Takht across the sarovar, and allow time for the city's other four sarovar shrines, Baba Atal, Kaulsar, Bibeksar and Ramsar, and Guru ke Mahal, all within the old city. From Amritsar the Tarn Taran road runs south to Goindwal and Khadur Sahib, early seats of the third and second Gurus. West and south, Anandpur Sahib holds Kesgarh Sahib and the Hola Mohalla gathering, while Talwandi Sabo in Bathinda district holds Damdama Sahib, where the Guru rested and prepared the complete scripture. Jugti's Panj Takht page explains how the five thrones work together, two of them outside this state.

How do pilgrims travel between Punjab's gurdwaras?

Most pilgrims work in circuits. Amritsar's shrines are a walking day within the walled city and its sarovar ring. Sultanpur Lodhi's six shrines stand within one small town on the Kali Bein and pair with Kapurthala by road. The Malwa shrines follow the Guru Gobind Singh Marg, the marked highway that retraces the Guru's 1705 journey from Anandpur Sahib through Machhiwara, Raikot, Dina and Kotkapura to Muktsar and Talwandi Sabo, so a driver can follow the story in the order it happened. Muktsar's four shrines belong together around Maghi in January, Anandpur Sahib fills at Hola Mohalla and Vaisakhi, and Sultanpur Lodhi at Guru Nanak Gurpurab. Everywhere in Punjab the pattern is the same: cover your head, remove footwear, and expect langar at the shrine whatever the hour.

Which is the most important gurdwara in Punjab?

The Harmandir Sahib at Amritsar, the Golden Temple, is the holiest shrine in Sikhism, and the Akal Takht facing it is the highest seat of the Khalsa's temporal authority. It is the natural first stop of any Punjab pilgrimage, and its surrounding sarovar shrines make Amritsar the fullest single day in this guide.

How many Takhts are in Indian Punjab?

Three of the five Takhts stand in Indian Punjab: the Akal Takht at Amritsar, Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib at Anandpur Sahib and Takht Sri Damdama Sahib at Talwandi Sabo. The other two, Takht Sri Patna Sahib in Bihar and Takht Sachkhand Sri Hazur Sahib at Nanded in Maharashtra, complete the five and are covered in Jugti's guide to Gurdwaras in India.

Is this list only for Punjab state?

Yes. This hub covers the present day Indian state of Punjab only. Sikh shrines in the Punjab of Pakistan, including Nankana Sahib and Kartarpur Sahib, have their own Jugti hub, Gurdwaras in Pakistani Punjab, and the Delhi, Himalayan and other Indian shrines sit under Gurdwaras in India. Keeping the two Punjabs in separate guides mirrors how pilgrims actually travel: one side needs no corridor or permit, the other is visited through arranged yatras and the Kartarpur Corridor.
