Gurdwara Ber Sahib is the principal gurdwara of Sultanpur Lodhi in the Kapurthala district of Punjab, standing on the bank of the Kali Bein rivulet beside an old ber, or jujube, tree. It marks the place where Guru Nanak Dev Ji meditated during his years in the town and where, the janamsakhis say, he disappeared into the Bein for three days in 1499 and emerged ready to begin his teaching journeys.

Why is Ber Sahib sacred to Sikhs?

Ber Sahib is sacred because it stands at the turning point of Guru Nanak's life. The young Nanak came to Sultanpur Lodhi as a storekeeper, a working man with a wife and two sons, and he left it as a Guru with a message for the world. The gurdwara is the largest in the town, built half a kilometre west of the old town on the bank of the Kali Bein, and tradition holds that the old ber tree by its side is the very tree under which the Guru sat in meditation.

Under that tree, the accounts say, Guru Nanak meditated daily for the whole of his long stay in Sultanpur Lodhi, a period tradition counts as 14 years, nine months and 13 days. Every morning he bathed in the Bein and then sat beneath the ber in prayer. A sarovar serves pilgrims at the shrine today, and the tree itself is tended as a living relic of the Guru's years here.

Fourteen years in Sultanpur Lodhi

Sultanpur Lodhi was a prosperous trading town on the old Delhi to Lahore road when Nanak arrived. His elder sister, Bebe Nanaki, was married to Jai Ram, an official in the service of Nawab Daulat Khan Lodhi, and through Jai Ram the young Nanak found work as modi, the keeper of the nawab's provision stores. He married Bibi Sulakhani in the town, and his two sons, Sri Chand and Lakhmi Das, were born here.

Those working years were not a pause before the Guru's real life began. A sangat, a congregation, gathered around him in Sultanpur, drawn by his hymns and by the fairness of his store, whose weighing stones are honoured today at Gurdwara Hatt Sahib. Bhai Gurdas, writing a century later, praised Sultanpur as a treasure of devotion. The town's cluster of gurdwaras, each tied to one episode of these years, still maps the Guru's daily round: the store, the home, the riverbank.

The disappearance in the Kali Bein

In 1499, when Guru Nanak was about thirty, came the morning that changed everything. As the janamsakhis tell it, he went down to the Kali Bein for his usual bath and did not come back. Searchers found his clothes on the bank and feared he had drowned. Three days later he reappeared at a spot about two kilometres upstream, now marked by Gurdwara Sant Ghat Sahib, and spoke the words Sikhs have repeated ever since: there is no Hindu, there is no Muslim.

Sikhs understand that immersion as the Guru's direct communion with the Divine, the moment of enlightenment from which his teaching flows. The words he spoke on emerging reject every wall between communities: God is neither Hindu nor Muslim, and the path to follow is God's own. Soon afterwards Guru Nanak left Sultanpur on the first of his great journeys, the udasis, carrying that message across Asia. His birthplace at Nankana Sahib tells where his life began; Ber Sahib tells where his mission began.

Architecture: the white hall by the Bein

The present building is a twentieth century shrine raised by Maharaja Jagatjit Singh of Kapurthala. Its cornerstone was laid by Bhai Arjan Singh of Bagarian on 25 February 1937, and on completion it was dedicated by Maharaja Yadavinder Singh of Patiala on 26 January 1941. The gurdwara stands on a high plinth above the Bein, entered through a portico carried on octagonal columns, with a small entrance gallery leading into the prayer hall.

Inside, the hall is high ceilinged and floored in marble. At its far end, beneath a tall archway worked with floral designs in stucco, the sanctum holds the Guru Granth Sahib seated on a white marble palki, a canopied throne. The white exterior, the dome and the riverside setting make Ber Sahib the visual landmark of Sultanpur Lodhi, the first shrine most pilgrims see and the one to which they return at dusk.

The Kali Bein today

The Kali Bein is a rivulet of about 160 kilometres that rises near Dhanoa in Hoshiarpur district and flows past Sultanpur Lodhi to join the meeting of the Beas and the Satluj at Harike. In the later twentieth century it choked with weeds and pollution. From the year 2000, Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal led a vast kar sewa, voluntary service in the spirit of the langar tradition of selfless work, in which thousands of volunteers cleared the stream, built bathing ghats and laid a road along its banks. The revival raised the local water table and made the Guru's riverbank a place of living water again.

Visiting Ber Sahib: Gurpurab and how to reach

Ber Sahib holds daily services like every gurdwara, and its great gathering is the fair each November for Guru Nanak Gurpurab, the Guru's birth anniversary, when Sultanpur Lodhi fills with pilgrims from across the world. Like the town's other shrines, it is administered by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee through a local committee. Sultanpur Lodhi has its own railway station and lies about 27 kilometres by road from Kapurthala. Most pilgrims walk the short distances between Ber Sahib, Hatt Sahib and the town's other gurdwaras in a single day, and the Gurdwaras in India guide places Ber Sahib among the essential shrines of Guru Nanak's life.
