Hanuman is the divine monkey god of the Ramayana, the devoted companion and messenger of Ram. Hindus honour him as the perfect devotee: immensely strong, learned and utterly selfless, who found the captive Sita in Lanka, carried a mountain of healing herbs across India to save Ram's brother, and asked for nothing in return. His hymn, the Hanuman Chalisa, is among the most recited prayers in Hinduism, and his temples stand in nearly every town in India.

Hanuman is the god who is famous for not seeking fame. The strongest figure in the Ramayana spends the epic entirely in another's service, and that is precisely why Hindus love him: in Hanuman, power and humility become the same thing. Temples to him stand everywhere, often small and painted vermilion, and on Tuesdays and Saturdays they fill with devotees who regard him as the remover of difficulties, the healer of sorrows and the guardian against evil spirits.
Who is Hanuman?
Hanuman is a vanara, one of the forest-dwelling monkey people of the epics, born to Kesari and Anjana, and blessed by Vayu, the wind god, who is counted as his spiritual father and gives him his speed and his name Maruti, son of the wind. Shaiva tradition reveres him further as an incarnation of Shiva himself. Later texts count him among the Chiranjivis, the immortals who still walk the earth. His devotion to Ram is complete: popular images show him kneeling with folded hands, or tearing open his chest to reveal Ram and Sita enthroned in his heart.
Hanuman in the Ramayana
The Ramayana gives Hanuman its most dramatic missions. It was Hanuman who first met the exiled Ram in the forest and brought him to the monkey king Sugriva. When Sita had to be found, Hanuman grew to giant size, leapt across the ocean to Lanka, found her in the Ashoka grove, gave her Ram's ring as proof, and let himself be captured so he could warn Ravana face to face. The demons set his tail alight; he escaped and, with the burning tail, fired the city before leaping home. In the great battle, when Ram's brother Lakshmana lay dying, Hanuman flew to the Himalaya for the healing Sanjeevani herb, and, unable to pick out the plant, carried back the whole mountain. He appears again in the Mahabharata, humbling the proud Bhima and blessing Arjuna, whose chariot flew Hanuman's banner.
What Hanuman teaches
The tradition reads Hanuman as the model of bhakti, devotion without self: strength, learning and eloquence placed entirely at the service of another. He is also a scholar in the later texts, master of the Vedas and of grammar, and a yogi of perfect discipline. For ordinary devotees he is the god to call on in trouble: the Hanuman Chalisa, Tulsidas's forty verses in his praise, is recited in sickness, fear and difficulty across northern India, and many keep a fast or visit his temple on Tuesdays in his honour.
Festivals and temples
Hanuman Jayanti, his birthday, is kept with processions, readings of the Ramayana and distribution of sweets. Unlike most gods, Hanuman has no single greatest shrine; instead his temples are numberless, from the great Hanuman Garhi at Ayodhya to roadside shrines in every district, because he is the god who stays near. Wrestlers claim him as patron, and village akharas often keep his image. You can see the range of his worship in Jugti's mandirs of India guide.
Hanuman in Punjab
Tradition counts Hanuman among the Chiranjeevis, the immortals who still walk the earth, and believes he is present wherever Ram's story is told with devotion, sitting at the back of the gathering, unrecognised. The Mahabharata gives him one more meeting: on the Pandava Bhima's journey, an old monkey lay across the path and would not move, and the mighty Bhima, for all his strength, could not shift even its tail. The monkey was Hanuman, Bhima's own elder brother, for both were sons of the wind god; he blessed Bhima, and Bhima's banner in the coming war carried Hanuman's image, which is why Arjuna's chariot flag, the kapidhvaja, bore a monkey.
At Varanasi stands the Sankat Mochan temple, the reliever of troubles, founded by Tulsidas himself at the spot where tradition says Hanuman appeared to him, and its Tuesday crowds fill the lane from before dawn. Patna's Mahavir Mandir is among the most visited temples of the north. In most Hanuman temples the offering is sindoor, orange vermilion, in memory of the story that Hanuman, hearing Sita wore sindoor for Ram's long life, covered his whole body with it, so completely did he wish Ram protected.
His most famous image of all may be the one in which Hanuman tears open his own chest and shows Ram and Sita dwelling inside his heart, enthroned where his devotion lives. Temples and bazaar prints across India show it, and it explains his worship better than any list of miracles: Hanuman is honoured less for what he can do than for the completeness of his surrender, and devotees who feel far from God pray to the servant who is never separated from him.
Hanuman is one of the most worshipped gods in Punjab: his Tuesday congregations fill temples in every town, the Chalisa is recited in Punjabi homes in Gurmukhi and Devanagari editions, and Hanuman Jayanti processions are fixtures of the region's calendar. In Amritsar, tradition links his worship with troops of langur monkeys around an old temple, and Punjabi devotees in the diaspora carry his Tuesday fast and his hymn wherever they settle.
