About the book
Eho Hamara Jeevna — "Such Is Our Life" — is the novel that made Dalip Kaur Tiwana's name. Published in 1968, it was only her second novel, and it announced one of the most distinctive voices in modern Punjabi fiction: a writer who looked unflinchingly at what patriarchy does to women, and who refused to soften the picture.
The book won the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1971, was translated into English as And Such is Her Fate, and went on to reach audiences far beyond the page — first as a television serial on DD Punjabi in 1996–97, then as a film directed by Om Puri in 2011. Puri said of the novel: "Eho Hamara Jeevna looks at the condition of women in Punjab and though the novel was written almost four decades ago, the story still rings true."
That Eho Hamara Jeevna was Tiwana's second novel makes its assurance startling. First novels are often autobiographical; second novels reveal whether a writer has a subject or merely a story. Tiwana's subject announced itself fully formed: the condition of women under patriarchy, rendered without sentimentality and without despair. The novel's famous bleakness is not hopelessness — it is clarity. Tiwana refuses to console the reader because consolation would be a lie about Bhano's world.
## Plot & themes
Bhano is a poor woman from a poor farming family in rural Punjab. In her village, women are treated as commodities, and Bhano's father is ready to sell his daughter, arranging her marriage to Sarban of Moranwali village. After the marriage she faces harassment and cruelty; Sarban's four unmarried brothers try to abuse her, and his friends harass her too. When Sarban dies, her life grows more miserable still, and her father tries to sell her once more — this time to Sarban's own brothers.
Bhano tries to escape by suicide. A man named Narain saves her and accepts her as his wife, giving her the social recognition no one else would. But the patriarchal order is larger than any one man's decency, and Bhano finds she cannot fulfil even her simplest goals in life.
The critic Harjeet Singh Gill's verdict on Bhano has become famous: "She has no kith or kin. Once the bargain is struck, her relationship with her parents also gets detached. She lives in an island of social outcast even in a small village. She belongs to none. But socially and individually, she does not 'exist,' she only 'floats.'" The novel's theme is right there in the title: this is what "our life" — a woman's life — amounts to under patriarchy.
Narain, the man who saves Bhano, deserves attention as a deliberate authorial choice. A lesser novel would make him the reward — the good man who fixes everything. Tiwana makes him something rarer: a decent man inside an indecent system, whose individual kindness cannot dismantle the structure around them. The novel's honesty is in this refusal of rescue. Bhano's tragedy is not that no one is kind to her; it is that kindness is not enough. That distinction — between personal virtue and structural cruelty — is what lifts the book from melodrama to literature, and it is why the novel still stings.
## The author
Dalip Kaur Tiwana (1935–2020) was one of the foremost novelists and short-story writers of contemporary Punjabi literature. Born in the village of Rabbon in Ludhiana district, she joined Punjabi University, Patiala, as a lecturer in 1963 and rose to become professor, head of the Punjabi department, and dean of the faculty of languages.
Her honours included the Sahitya Akademi Award (1971) for this novel, the Saraswati Samman (2001) for Katha Kaho Urvashi, the Padma Shri (2004), and the Punjabi Sahit Rattan Award (2008). She was a widely translated author whose fiction consistently centred the inner lives of women. Her own autobiography, Nange Pairan Da Safar, was translated into English as A Journey on Bare Feet.
Tiwana's academic career matters to the fiction. As a professor and eventually head of Punjabi at Punjabi University, Patiala, she spent decades teaching the tradition she was rewriting — the male canon of Punjabi letters, the folk romances with their suffering heroines. Eho Hamara Jeevna can be read as her answer to that tradition: what if the heroine of the qissa were given neither poetry nor rescue, but only the truth of her situation? The university gave her the authority to ask; the novel gave her the form.
## Reception & legacy
Eho Hamara Jeevna has remained continuously in print and in discussion for more than five decades. Its television adaptation brought Bhano's story to a mass audience in the 1990s, and the Om Puri film renewed attention in 2011. In classrooms and in criticism, the novel stands as the defining Punjabi statement on the commodification of women — a book that made it impossible to look away.
The adaptations extended the novel's life in unusual ways. The DD Punjabi serial of 1996–97 took Bhano into homes that had never bought a novel, and Om Puri's 2011 film — announced with his remark that the story "still rings true" after four decades — introduced her to a new century. Few Punjabi novels have lived so many lives. Each retelling confirms the same thing: Bhano is not a character of 1968 but a permanent figure, as long as the conditions that made her persist.
## Read it if...
You want the novel that forced Punjabi literature to confront what it does to its daughters. It is a short book with a long shadow — and essential context for everything Tiwana wrote afterward.
You want to understand why Dalip Kaur Tiwana is the name Punjabi feminism keeps returning to. This is the foundation stone; everything else she wrote stands on it.
