History & the Sacha Sauda sakhi

As a boy of about twelve, Guru Nanak Dev Ji was handed twenty rupees by his father, Mehta Kalu, and sent to the market town of Chuharkana — today Farooqabad, some 37 miles from Lahore on the Lahore–Lyallpur line — to buy goods he could sell at a profit and learn the ways of trade.

On the way, the young Nanak came upon a group of sadhus who had gone hungry for days. Moved by their condition, he spent the entire sum feeding them — a langar for the saints — and returned home empty-handed.

When his father demanded to know what business he had done, Nanak replied that he had struck a “sacha sauda”, a true bargain: no profit could be greater than feeding the hungry. The scolding that followed did not shake him, and the episode became one of the most beloved sakhis of his childhood.

On the spot where the sadhus were fed now stands Gurdwara Sacha Sauda, raised by Maharaja Ranjit Singh on the pattern of a fortress, its Darshani Deorhi drawing congregations from afar. In its early years the shrine was served by Udasis; after the Gurdwara Reform Movement it came under Panthic administration.

Partition in 1947 closed the gurdwara, as the Sikhs and Hindus of the area crossed into India. Decades later, in the 1990s, Sikh sangats were once again allowed to pay homage here. Across the railway line nearby stands another historic shrine, Gurdwara Sach Khand Sahib.

Architecture & the complex

The gurdwara is built in the fortress style of Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s era — high walls, arched openings and domed pavilions, with the imposing Darshani Deorhi (entrance gateway) as its most striking feature. The 1933 photograph shown on this page captures the shrine much as it stood in the early twentieth century.

The complex holds the main prayer hall, a langar hall that keeps alive the memory of the first langar, and open courtyards for the sangat.

Religious significance

Sacha Sauda is remembered as the spiritual beginning of langar, the free community kitchen that is among Sikhism’s most visible institutions. The sakhi teaches that selfless service (seva) outweighs the gathering of wealth — a lesson Sikh parents still pass to their children through this very story.

For pilgrims, the shrine stands alongside Nankana Sahib, Kartarpur Sahib and Panja Sahib as one of the essential Pakistani gurdwaras connected with Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s own life.
