Gurdas Maan Postpones Amritsar Show After Jhota Killing

Punjab's music and film industry is pulling back from stage and screen after the murder of anti-drug activist Parvinder Singh Jhota in Mansa on October 13. Singer Gurdas Maan has postponed his October 25 show in Amritsar, and Balkaur Singh, father of Sidhu Moosewala, has put the remaining dates of his son's hologram tour on hold.

Which shows have been postponed?

Maan's manager confirmed to Babushahi that the October 25 concert at Khalsa College of Engineering and Technology in Amritsar, due to begin at 6:30 pm, has been postponed. No new date has been announced. Balkaur Singh said the remaining 'Signed to God' hologram tour dates in Calgary and the United States are postponed, saying Mansa and Punjab come first. The Toronto and Vancouver shows had already taken place and were sold out, he said.

Who else has stepped back?

Actress Neeru Bajwa has put her film Thaapi, which opened in theatres on October 16, on hold. Diljit Dosanjh called Jhota a martyr in an Instagram story and said the family deserves justice, reports said. Singers Babbu Maan and Ranjit Bawa visited the family at the Mansa protest site, and comedian Sukhwinder Singh Dhutta said he would not mimic the Chief Minister until justice is done.

Why now?

Jhota was shot dead on October 13 during a confrontation with a medical store owner over the sale of addictive drugs, according to police. His family and an action committee have refused cremation, demanding a CBI probe. Questions had been raised on social media about the silence of Punjabi artists, and the announcements followed.

What happens next?

Union Home Minister Amit Shah is due in Punjab on October 20 to meet families of people killed for speaking against drugs. Organisers have not said when the postponed shows will be rescheduled.

Why did Gurdas Maan postpone his Amritsar show?

Reports say he took the decision amid protests demanding justice for Jhota; the show was set for October 25.

What is happening with Sidhu Moosewala's hologram tour?

Balkaur Singh has postponed the remaining Calgary and US dates, citing the situation in Punjab.

Has Thaapi been withdrawn?

Neeru Bajwa has put the film on hold; it released on October 16 and no new date has been announced.
