Punjabi family terms are famously precise, and that precision is the first thing diaspora learners notice: English makes do with one word, "uncle", where Punjabi has five. A ਤਾਇਆ (taya) is your father's elder brother, a ਚਾਚਾ (chacha) is your father's younger brother, and a ਮਾਮਾ (mama) is your mother's brother. The side of the family is built into the word, and so is seniority. Learning these terms matters beyond vocabulary: in a Punjabi home you will be introduced, seated and served by relation, and using the right word, usually with ਜੀ (ji) added for respect, is how a guest shows they understand the family. Every term below is given with its exact relation, and the ones the Jugti Kosh already covers link to their own full entry.

Grandparents and parents

On your father's side: ਦਾਦਾ (dada) is your father's father, and ਦਾਦੀ (dadi) is your father's mother. On your mother's side: ਨਾਨਾ (nana) is your mother's father, and ਨਾਨੀ (nani) is your mother's mother. Your parents are ਪਿਤਾ (pita, father) and ਮਾਤਾ (mata, mother) in formal words, but at home father is usually ਬਾਪੂ (bapu) and mother is ਬੇਬੇ (bebe), and the two together are your ਮਾਪੇ (maape, parents). A mother's childhood home, her parents' house, is her ਪੇਕੇ (peke), a word every Punjabi daughter knows.

Your father's side: taya, chacha and bhua

Your father's elder brother is your ਤਾਇਆ (taya), and his wife is your ਤਾਈ (tai). Your father's younger brother is your ਚਾਚਾ (chacha), and his wife is your ਚਾਚੀ (chachi). Your father's sister is your ਭੂਆ (bhua), and her husband is your ਫੁੱਫੜ (phupphar). The split between taya and chacha is pure seniority: the same man is taya to the children of his younger brothers and chacha to the children of his elder brothers. In the joint family the taya is traditionally a second head of the household, while the chacha is often the uncle closest in age and spirit to the children.

Your mother's side: mama and masi

Your mother's brother is your ਮਾਮਾ (mama), and his wife is your ਮਾਮੀ (mami). Your mother's sister is your ਮਾਸੀ (masi), literally "like a mother" (maa-si), and her husband is your ਮੌਸਾ (mausa). The mama holds a special place in Punjabi life: he is the uncle who gifts at weddings, whose village is the children's holiday home, and the bond is summed up in the saying that there is no relative like the mama. Your mother's family village is your ਨਾਨਕੇ (naanke), the maternal grandparents' place, loved in song and memory across Punjab.

Brothers, sisters and their children

A brother is ਭਾਈ (bhai), an elder brother is ਵੱਡਾ ਭਾਈ (vadda bhai), a brother spoken of with affection and respect is a ਵੀਰ (veer), and a sister is a ਭੈਣ (bhen). Your elder brother's wife is your ਭਾਬੀ (bhabhi), a relation treated with the warmth of an elder sister. The children of your siblings split by whose they are: your brother's son is your ਭਤੀਜਾ (bhatija) and his daughter your ਭਤੀਜੀ (bhatiji), while your sister's son is your ਭਾਣਜਾ (bhanja) and her daughter your ਭਾਣਜੀ (bhanji). Your own children are ਪੁੱਤਰ (puttar, son) and ਧੀ (dhee, daughter). One more generation down, your son's children are your ਪੋਤਾ (pota, grandson) and ਪੋਤੀ (poti, granddaughter), and your daughter's children are your ਦੋਹਤਾ (dohta) and ਦੋਹਤੀ (dohti): Punjabi keeps even the grandchildren sorted by which of your children they belong to.

Relations by marriage

Marriage brings its own set of words, used by a wife and a husband about each other's families. Your spouse's father is your ਸੋਹਰਾ (sohra, father-in-law) and your spouse's mother is your ਸੱਸ (sass, mother-in-law). From a husband's side: his wife's brother is his ਸਾਲਾ (sala) and her sister is his ਸਾਲੀ (sali), and the man married to his wife's sister, his co-brother-in-law, is his ਸਾਡੂ (sadhu). An elder sister's husband is a ਜੀਜਾ (jija). From a wife's side, her husband's elder brother is her ਜੇਠ (jeth) and his wife her ਜੇਠਾਣੀ (jethani); his younger brother is her ਦਿਓਰ (devar) and his wife her ਦਿਓਰਾਣੀ (devarani); and his sister is her ਨਣਦ (nanad), whose husband is the ਨਣਦੋਇਆ (nandoia). A husband is ਪਤੀ (pati) and a wife is ਪਤਨੀ (patni), and the whole web of relations together is the ਪਰਿਵਾਰ (parivar), the family.

Ji, and how respect works in these words

Almost every term on this page is spoken with ਜੀ (ji) when you address the person directly: ਚਾਚਾ ਜੀ, ਮਾਮਾ ਜੀ, ਭੂਆ ਜੀ. Ji softens the word into respect, and elders are always addressed by their relation, never by their personal name. The terms also stretch beyond blood: your father's close friend is ਚਾਚਾ ਜੀ to you, your mother's friend is ਮਾਸੀ ਜੀ or ਆਂਟੀ ਜੀ, and an elderly neighbour is ਬਾਪੂ ਜੀ or ਬੇਬੇ ਜੀ. Children learn the tree by living it, and a learner who uses the right word at the door has already been welcomed in.

What is the difference between a chacha and a mama?

A chacha is your father's younger brother, on your father's side of the family. A mama is your mother's brother, on your mother's side. The two words are never interchangeable in Punjabi, because the side of the family is part of the meaning.

What do you call your father's elder brother in Punjabi?

Your father's elder brother is your taya (ਤਾਇਆ), and his wife is your tai (ਤਾਈ). Only your father's younger brother is your chacha (ਚਾਚਾ). Seniority decides the word.

What are the Punjabi words for grandparents?

Your father's parents are dada (ਦਾਦਾ, grandfather) and dadi (ਦਾਦੀ, grandmother). Your mother's parents are nana (ਨਾਨਾ, grandfather) and nani (ਨਾਨੀ, grandmother). Punjabi keeps the two pairs separate, just as it does with uncles and aunts.

Why does Punjabi have so many words for uncle and aunt?

Because in a Punjabi family your exact relation decides how you address someone, the respect you show them and often your role at weddings and ceremonies. The words carry the side of the family (father's or mother's) and, on the father's side, whether the uncle is older or younger than your father.
