Sikhism's holiest shrine: the Golden Temple of Amritsar, its history and visitor guide

In short

Harmandir Sahib, the Golden Temple of Amritsar, is the holiest shrine in Sikhism — a gold-leafed sanctum on a platform in the middle of the Amrit Sarovar, open to people of every faith. Built by Guru Arjan Dev Ji, who installed the Adi Granth here on 16 August 1604, it was rebuilt in marble and gold by Maharaja Ranjit Singh in the early 1800s. Over 150,000 people visit every day, and its free langar kitchen serves nearly a hundred thousand meals daily.

What is Harmandir Sahib?

Harmandir Sahib — the Golden Temple of Amritsar — is the holiest shrine and the pre-eminent spiritual site of Sikhism. Known also as Sri Darbar Sahib, “the exalted court”, it is a gurdwara like no other: a sanctum covered in gold leaf, standing on a square platform in the middle of the Amrit Sarovar, the Pool of Nectar, and joined to the shore by a single long causeway.

The name itself tells you what it is — Hari, God; mandir, house; Sahib, a word of respect: the House of God. It is an open house of worship for people of every faith and walk of life, and its nomination for UNESCO World Heritage status sits on the tentative list.

History: from a pool of nectar to the House of God

The story begins with land and water. The ground that became Amritsar — then called Guru Da Chakk — was chosen by Guru Amar Das Ji, the third Sikh Guru, who asked his disciple Ram Das to find a site for a new town around a man-made pool. When Ram Das became the fourth Guru, he founded the town of Ramdaspur and set his people to the great excavation: the Amrit Sarovar, the Pool of Nectar, dug under the supervision of Baba Budha Ji and completed in 1577. Merchants and artisans were invited from across India to settle around it, and the town grew into the city of Amritsar. Read more about the founder in the life of Guru Ram Das Ji.

It was Guru Arjan Dev Ji, the fifth Guru, who conceived a central place of worship for the Sikhs — and designed it himself. Construction began in 1581 with the pool kept dry, and the work took some eight years. The SGPC records that the foundation was laid in December 1588 by Hazrat Mian Mir Ji, a Muslim saint of Lahore — a tradition cherished as a symbol of the temple’s openness, though some historians note the account is not confirmed in contemporary records. Guru Arjan Dev Ji supervised the building himself, with Baba Budha Ji, Bhai Gurdas Ji and Bhai Sahlo Ji beside him.

Every line of the design carried a meaning. Unlike the temples of the age, which stood high above the town, the sanctum was built lower than the surrounding ground — a lesson in humility, that one must bow, inwardly at least, to enter. Unlike temples with a single gate, it was opened on all four sides, so that people of every caste, creed and direction could walk in as equals. And a single bridge, the causeway, joined the shore to the sanctum in the water: many ways to approach, but one destination.

The brick temple was complete by 1589. Then came the event that made Amritsar the heart of the Sikh world: on 16 August 1604, Guru Arjan Dev Ji installed the newly compiled Adi Granth — the first version of the Sikh scripture — inside the sanctum and appointed Baba Budha Ji as its first granthi. From that day the shrine held the standing of Ath Sath Tirath, the shrine of sixty-eight pilgrimages: to visit here, the belief goes, is equal to visiting all sixty-eight great pilgrimage sites of the subcontinent.

Destruction, rebuilding, and the gold of Ranjit Singh

The temple’s very centrality made it a target. Through the eighteenth century it was attacked, desecrated and destroyed again and again. In 1737 the Mughal governor had the temple’s custodian, Bhai Mani Singh, executed; in 1746 a Lahore official had the pool filled with sand; in 1757 the Afghan ruler Ahmad Shah Durrani attacked Amritsar and desecrated the shrine; and in 1762 Durrani returned and had the temple blown up with gunpowder. Each time the Sikhs came back and rebuilt — in 1764 Jassa Singh Ahluwalia collected donations for the reconstruction, a new gateway, causeway and sanctum were completed by 1776, and a canal was cut to bring fresh water from the Ravi river.

The temple the world knows today is the work of Maharaja Ranjit Singh. In 1802, at twenty-two, he took Amritsar and announced he would rebuild the shrine in marble and gold. The first gilded copper panel was placed in 1803; the marble-and-copper reconstruction was finished in 1809; and in 1830 he donated the gold that overlaid the sanctum in gold leaf. That gold gave the temple the name the English-speaking world knows it by: the Golden Temple.

Across the causeway stands the Akal Takht, raised by Guru Hargobind Ji in the early 1600s — the chief seat of religious authority in Sikhism. In June 1984, during Operation Blue Star, the Indian Army’s action against armed militants inside the complex caused severe damage and destroyed the Akal Takht; the complex was rebuilt in the years that followed.

Architecture: a school of its own

The sanctum rises from a 67-foot square platform in the centre of the pool; the temple itself is a 40.5-foot square with a door on each of its four sides — east, west, north and south. At the shore end of the causeway stands the Darshani Deori, a decorated arch whose door frame stands about ten feet high; from it a bridge 202 feet long and 21 feet wide leads across the water to the shrine. A thirteen-foot-wide parikrama, the circumambulation path, rings the main building, and at the Har ki Paure — the Steps of God — the Guru Granth Sahib is read continuously on the first floor.

The building is three storeys of cusped arches and ornament. Above the first floor a four-foot parapet rises on all four sides, with small pavilions at the corners; at the very centre stands a small square room, the third storey, crowned by a low fluted dome — the gumbaz — with a lotus-petal motif at its base and an inverted lotus above, supporting a kalash and a chhatri. The SGPC describes the result as a unique harmony of Hindu and Muslim ways of building — a blend so distinctive that it counts as the beginning of an independent Sikh school of architecture.

Why is the Golden Temple so important?

Because it is where Sikhism comes to pray as one family. Since 1604 it has been the religion’s central pilgrimage place and rallying point; the scripture enthroned here is the living Guru of the Sikhs, and in their daily Ardas, Sikhs around the world ask for the blessing of visiting Sri Amritsar and paying obeisance at Harmandir Sahib. Its four doors teach equality, its lowered floor teaches humility, and its doors never close to anyone — Sikh or not, believer or curious traveller. Few buildings on earth receive more devotion: over 150,000 people come here to worship every single day.

Daily life, langar and festivals

The temple’s day begins before dawn, when the Guru Granth Sahib is carried in state to the sanctum for the prakash, the opening, and Asa di Var, the morning hymn, rises over the water. Kirtan — devotional singing — fills the halls through the day, and late at night the scripture is carried in procession to rest, the sukhasan, closing the day as it began, in music.

No visit is complete without the langar. The Guru ka Langar at Harmandir Sahib is one of the largest free kitchens in the world, serving simple vegetarian meals — dal, roti, rice, vegetables, kheer — to nearly a hundred thousand people every day, and twice that on festivals. Three hundred sewadars and hundreds of volunteers keep it running around the clock; on busy days a roti-making machine that turns out 25,000 rotis an hour takes over the heaviest work. Everyone sits on the floor together, on the same level — no one above, no one below.

The brightest days of the calendar are Bandi Chhor Divas, when the whole complex blazes with lights, and Vaisakhi, the spring harvest festival that also marks the birth of the Khalsa.

Visiting the Golden Temple

Entry is free, and the complex stays open through the day and night. Visitors cover their heads and remove their shoes before entering, as at every gurdwara, and many pilgrims take a dip in the sarovar as an act of faith. The temple stands in the old city of Amritsar, Punjab — the city page has the full travel picture. Come at dawn for the quietest darshan, or after dark when the gold hangs reflected in black water: either way the line keeps moving, the kirtan keeps playing, and the langar never stops.
